Saturday Aug 4

We came into town the night before to check out the grounds, sip a few beers and see the band playing in the beer gardens. Like a little vacation...if only for a night...
Today we wake up around ten, after about a 2 a.m. bedtime. Too early?...hell yeah...but a racing mind always wins in my world.

Tonight we open/close for Country legend Sammy Kershaw on the main stage.

We start with calling for a take out breakfast from "Vicky's Kitchen"... The guys in my band aren't yet there. (At this point it's just myself, Dee, and my son in law Andrew who came along to help out and work the merch table...)
Nothin' like bacon and eggs from a styrofoam container and a cold beer 'n' juice outside a prairie motel room...ok maybe there is, but I've never minded all the little things about a travelling lifestyle. In fact I love it!

We sauntered over to the grounds and (yep you guessed it) had a cold one with the band in the beer gardens again...they were doing a matinee performance. Our real mission was to find out sound check times etc...

The promoter grabbed me and introduced me to Perry Nyhus and Nevin from CFRM Regina who were there doing an "on location" thingy. I did a couple of promo spots on air with Nevin... before I went "on air" my wife (who is also my manager) whispers to me.."remember, no F bombs"...
She's so awesome she always makes me smile...and she's great at what she does...which is basically to handle the business and take all of the stress off of me...I love what she does...(and yes I tell her that constantly)...sidenote- she knows I say "fuck" a lot...

THEN:

Back again to the Motel, just to chill and wait for the call for sound check. Ahh the game of "hurry up and wait"...
My band are all coming on their own from different parts of the province... The first to show up at the hotel was bass player Vern Nixon...

"hey Vern, want a beer"?.... I always love that line cuz hey, what are the odds of having 2 Verns in the band right?

So a little time later (drummer) Neil shows up... we hung out in the sunshine having a cold one and waiting for the call for sound check... 'round about 3 we were wondering WTF? So I texted G..(keyboard gal and everyone's "Sister")...no response...
a short while later she showed up at the motel...

She says...

"I was just at the main stage and unloaded my keyboard"..."they were wondering when we were coming for sound check" "I pulled into the wrong gate and it turned out I was driving through the outfield of the slow pitch game that was going on"...oops" Believe me, if you knew G..you'd be laughing (like we were)...I mean, can't you just picture this lost vehicle driving around the outfield...lost and panicking screaming "I'm with the band"!!

Anyway, we all headed over to the grounds and at the security entrance apologized (and made a few jokes about G and her outfield drive)
Sound check was quick thanks to the pro's of Barndog Productions.

Then we're all back to the hotel to shower and change etc...

just prior to leaving for the show, we settle in outside for another brew and pre -show chatter...then a guy comes by and says hello in a southern drawl. "you with Sammy's crew?" I said
"yeah" "I'm the bass player"
"you want a beer?" I said
"sure, thanks"

Introductions all around....his name was Ernie, and like the rest of Sammy's band he was from Nashville... This is where it always gets interesting for me... Meeting the musicians, and sharing some stories etc... A helluva guy and he loves our Canadian beer! Though he's cautious with it..it's a little stronger up here...and he still has a show to do...

A little while later Gary (Sammy's guitar player) came out for one...he and I got on right away about guitars.

when it came time to head for the show they were waiting for someone to pick them up...
"hell jump in with us" someone said
"why not"

We drove with them to the grounds and agreed to meet backstage after their show...Gary had a sweeeet guitar he wanted to show me...

Perry Nyhus from CFRM Regina introduced us...
our planned opening had me onstage prior to the rest of the band... I was improvising (and trying to mess him up a bit)
I said to (bass player) Vern... "I'm gonna mess with Perry a bit"..."whataya think?"
"sure" he said smiling...
So I walked out a bit early and gave the big man a hug from behind as he was talking...he laughed but he didn't miss a beat lol...a helluva good guy and a great sport!

(night 2 "Harlequin" tale to follow)

PS...while hanging out in the afternoon we also met Sammy's keyboard player, Steve...also a very sweet guy!!..he summed it up well when he said "the trouble with travelling so much is that you meet so many very sweet people that you want to spend more time with but you know you'll likely never see them again" Yep!
